Professors, Researchers, Short-term Scholars, Interns or Specialists on Duke’s Form DS-2019 and Receiving Full Duke Compensation

No: Many scholars receiving compensation qualify for a Duke University Medical Insurance Plan. Postdoctoral Scholars and Associates can also be considered. Check with your sponsoring Duke department for verification.

If you do not qualify for a Duke University Medical Insurance Plan, you must purchase a policy on your own that meet the J-1 Visa requirements.

Please note that the Duke Medical Insurance Plan does not provide coverage for Medical Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains. Contact International SOS (ISOS) at 1-800-523-8662 and request an individual membership. The name of the policy you should request is VisitorUSA.

Yes: These scholars must purchase insurance coverage which meets or exceeds the J-1 Visa requirements. Duke’s Exchange Visitor insurance requirements.

Exchange Visitor Students Issued a Duke Form DS-2019 and Enrolled Full-time at Duke

No: Students must participate in the mandatory Duke University Student Insurance Plan (SMIP). For further details, contact the Student Health Insurance Manager at 919-684-WELL or via email at HealthyD@mc.duke.edu Students should also visit the Duke Student Health website.

Duke Students on Academic Training

Yes: These students must purchase a plan or request a that meets or exceeds the J-1 Visa requirements.

Exchange Visitors on a Non-Duke Sponsored Exchange Visitors Program

Maybe: Your Exchange Visitor program sponsor will provide instructions regarding your insurance requirements and you must provide evidence of the coverage to the Duke Visa Services Office. Exchange Visitors sponsored by Fulbright, LASPAU, ECFMG J Clinical House Staff or any other Non-Duke Sponsored Exchange Visitor fall under this category.
