Yes: Many scholars receiving compensation qualify for a Duke University Medical Insurance Plan. Postdoctoral Scholars and Associates can also be considered. Check with your sponsoring Duke department for verification.

Please note that the Duke Medical Insurance Plan does not provide coverage for Medical Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains – You may purchase International SOS (ISOS) by visiting their website or calling 1-800-523-8662 to request an individual membership. The name of the policy you should request is VisitorUSA.

If you do not qualify for a Duke University Medical Insurance Plan, you must purchase a policy on your own that meets or exceeds the minimum J-1 insurance requirements.

Yes: These scholars must purchase insurance coverage which meets or exceeds the J-1 insurance requirements.

Duke Exchange Visitor Students on a Duke Form DS-2019 and Enrolled Full-time at Duke

No: Students are automatically enrolled in the Duke University Student Medical Insurance Plan (SMIP). For further details, contact the Student Health Insurance Manager at 919-684-WELL(9355) or via email at shs-insurance@duke.edu. Students should also visit the Duke Student Health website.

Duke Students on Academic Training

Yes: These students must purchase a plan or request a that meets or exceeds the J-1 insurance requirements.

Non-Duke Sponsored Exchange Visitors (sponsored by Fulbright, LASPAU, ECFMG, Clinical House Staff, etc.)
