Local Residence Address for F-1 and J-1 Students

You are required to list a local residential address in DukeHub (formally ACES/STORM), for it must be reported to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security through the SEVIS system. This must be a physical address where you currently live in the United States, NOT a Post Office Box number or a non-U.S. address.

If you entered your local address in DukeHub (ACES) under "Home," "Mailing," or "Billing" address, we cannot push information under these titles to SEVIS. The only way we can successfully update your SEVIS address is if you enter your local address under “Local Residence”.

• On-Campus students cannot change their local addresses.
• Off-Campus students can and should update their addresses. For specific examples, please see our instructions on adding a "Local Address".

While in this address section, please take the opportunity to confirm you have recorded a permanent international address and your current telephone number. Please be sure to record the City, State, and Zip Codes properly or the information cannot be received by SEVIS. Please contact the Office of the University Registrar at 919-684-2813, if you have any difficulties entering your local address.

If you have an F-1 (Form I-20) or J-1 (Form DS-2019) status and your I-20 or DS-2019 was NOT issued by Duke you must update complete our Address Update Form.

If you have other specific questions about your address reporting responsibilities, please contact the Duke Visa Services office through visahelp@duke.edu. F-1 and J-1 students are in direct violation of their visa categories if their current addresses are not reported to DHS.

New SEVIS Address Format

Starting July 2015, SEVIS will demand that your "Local Address" adhere to a stricter format. We report the address that you enter as your "Local Residence" address in DukeHub to SEVIS. Your "Local Residence" address must now conform to the United States Postal Service (USPS) address standardizations.

Your "Local Residence" address in DukeHub must have a street number, street name, city, state, zip code, and country in that specific order. Ending words like "alley", "street", and "drive" must be in USPS approved abbreviations. The "state" must be in the standard two-letter abbreviation.

If your address includes suite, apartment, and/or room numbers they should be added to the end of the "street name" in your address or in address line 2, and follow these format rules:

• "Suite" should be abbreviated as "STE".
• "Apartment" should be abbreviated as "APT".
• "Room" should be abbreviated as "RM".
• The number should follow the abbreviation and be separated by a space.
• Do not use a period after the abbreviation.
• Do not use a number symbol (#) before the number.

If you are not sure if your address meets these requirements, you can test your address with the USPS Look Up a ZIP Code tool.

To use the USPS tool:

1. Select the "By Address" tab.
2. Enter the components of your address into the individual textboxes.
3. Click the "Find" button.
4. The results will load, and you will see the address you entered in the preferred USPS standardized format.

You can then take your address as it appears in the USPS tool and enter it as your "Local Residence" address in DukeHub. The USPS tool may add a hyphen (-) and four extra digits to your zip code, but you should only use the first five digits of the zip code in your “Local Residence” address. Please also remember to include the country in your "Local Residence" address, "USA" or "United States" should be acceptable.
