All non-immigrants traveling to the U.S. must request a visa, which reflects their planned activities in the U.S.

Immigration regulations require all students/scholars in F-1 and J-1 status to register with the host institution. Duke requires that all other new international students in different visa classes register as well.

Maintaining Status

It is the responsibility of each international visitor to the United States to maintain proper immigration status, to refrain from unauthorized work, and to file for an extension of stay in a timely manner. Our Maintaining Status webpage will help you understand how to meet those responsibilities so that you can qualify for and take advantage of the options that your temporary status in the United States offers.
