Mission
The Duke Visa Services office functions as a nexus for monitoring and shaping legislation, regulations, and policies at the federal, state and local levels that impact international educational initiatives. We interpret and apply those directives and controls in the Duke environment in customer service support of the teaching, research, patient care, and community service goals of the university, health system and affiliated institutions.
Duties And Responsibilities
In consultation with faculty, administration, and the Office of University Counsel, we determine the visa and employment options for international students, scholars, visitors, and employees, which will permit the greatest benefit and flexibility to Duke and to the individual. We work with federal and state government agencies, international organizations, and public and private entities to obtain appropriate visa documentation for admission to the U.S., authorization for employment, and maintenance of legal status for our international population.
In consultation with administration and the Office of Government Relations, we work with elected and appointed government officials, with public and private groups, and with colleagues at other institutions to promote. We encourage laws and policies that recognize and affirm the benefits of international exchange, and inform and advise government officials when proposed legislation or regulations may have negative effects.
As part of Duke's broad international character, we provide information and assistance to other Duke offices in furtherance of university and health systems international objectives.
